A Case Study of Search Engine Optimization - TAOTotem.com

TAO Totem - a meditation tool is both a business site and a test site for SEO. While taototem.com is a perfect example of a relatively simply eCommerce solution using a PayPal shopping cart, this website is being used as a test site for search engine optimization methodology. The site went live in late June 2004. At that time, of course, there were no back-links (links to the website from another domain) to the site. Tao Totem was listed with the free search engines -- of which there are very few -- and continually optimized and modified in an effort to lift awareness by the search engines without paid inclusions.

As of September 2004, without Pay-per-click implementation, the site has gained 93 backlinks. While this is good and shows how indexing occurs even with free listings and how the crawlers will find your site regardless of PPC, TAO Totem's positioning is still too low with no sales and little traffic. Various changes have been made throughout the three-month period to test how modification to the site affects search engine positioning.

In October we implemented additional, off-site traffic-generating changes and techniques to TAO Totem. The impact was not very stellar.

In February and March 2005, several additional techniques have been put in place: blogging, PPC strategies with both Google AdWords and with Overture, and link exchange. The effect is noticeable and by mid-March the web traffic improved by 435% over December 2005 and unique visitors to the site increased by 192%. Links recognized by major search engines exceed 300 and TAO Totem has more than 2,500 backlinks. Good results with improvements continuing as the strategy is fine-tuned.

In April 2005, we used a linking program to add links to our site and this helped tremendously with link popularity. As of July 1, 2005, there are over 2,500 links and TAO Totem's Page Rank with Google has risen to PR4.

While we gave TAO Totem a good run at the free approach (six months), it is evident that PPC and other paid strategies must be implemented if you want SE positioning, web traffic and a strong web presence for your website.

In July 2005, the TAO Totem Blog was implemented. Links from the blog are showing up in the web analytical program and backlinks have grown to over 11,000. In addition, a satellite website has been setup, Meditation-Works.com, that displays related Google Adsense ads and links back to TAO Totem. These are the methods that improve link popularity and offset the Pay-Per-Click (PPC) expenses. Life is good. Much better

In early 2006, we replaced our linking strategy with LinkMetro.com for building link popularity. This has been a very successful program which has maintained and strengthened the PR5 for TAO Totem.

Another program put into place to generate traffic adds article publication to the mix. This has been very effective not only in increasing the PR but also in creating a better sense of authority on the topic of meditation and meditation tools. As a result, fo most of TAO Totem's keywords, TAO Totem appears organically in position 1, 2, and 3 and the need to pay for keywords is diminishing.

    To encourage businesses to list with our website, we will begin to enter Reno, Sparks, Carson City and surrounding area businesses in the callyourexpert.com directory from the telephone directory, Chamber of Commerce or information made from direct contact with us.

    This listing will be listed at no cost to businesses through September 30, 2006. Beginning October 2006, the cost will only be $25 for a standard listing and $50 for a logo and a 50-word description.

    If you want to be listed right away at no cost through September 30, 2006, just contact us and we'll make sure your site is listed early. This site is expected to be live by September 30, 2006.
